Capital One Venture X Overview

When people think about premium credit cards, one that frequently gets mentioned is the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

It’s viewed as one of the best luxury cards and for very good reasons, but with an annual fee of $550, it may be too expensive for many.

So imagine my surprise when Capital One announced that the Capital One Venture X card’s annual fee is just $395, making it much more affordable than its competitors. Not only that, the card offers at least $400 in value every year, effectively negating the fee.

There had to be a catch. Maybe the sign-up bonus isn’t great or perhaps the perks aren’t up to par with the big boys. When the Venture X card was finally introduced in November 2021, I was pleasantly surprised how much it offers cardholders.

In fact, the Venture X card is so good that we ranked it as one of the Top 10 Best Credit Cards to have.

If you’re considering applying for the Capital One Venture X, here’s my review and everything you need to know about the card; the sign-up bonus, its benefits and perks, and more.

Capital One Venture X Sign-up Bonus

Apply for a Venture X card and get 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of opening an account.

I love sign-up bonuses. It’s a great way to try out a product and get so much value right off the bat. The Capital One Venture X doesn’t disappoint in this department.

These miles are worth at least $750 if you use them directly for travel purchases, including flights, hotels, rental cars, and parking. This equates to a mile value of 1¢ per mile ($750 ÷ 75,000 points).

However, you’ll get tremendous value by transferring these Capital One miles to one of their airline and hotel partners.

For instance, you can fly American Airlines Flagship First from the United States to London for just 50,000 miles. The same flight booked for cash costs $5,750 – representing a value of 11.5¢ per mile!

Personally, my wife and I each transferred 70,000 miles to British Airways to fly business class from Boston to Doha on Qatar Airways. Flying on top of a bed for 12 hours ain’t too shabby!

Capital One miles transfer 1:1 to the following airline partner programs:

  • Aeromexico Club Premier
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • Air France KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • Finnair Plus
  • Singapore Airlines Krisflyer
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Virgin Red

You can also transfer them to the following hotel partner programs:

  • Choice Privileges
  • Wyndham Rewards

You can also redeem the miles for cashback, convert them to gift cards, and use them to shop at Amazon. But doing so drops the value down to between 0.5¢ – 0.8¢ per mile. You should avoid these redemption options due to the poor value it provides.

Who Should Get The Venture X?

The Capital One Venture X card is perfect for someone who is looking for a one-card setup for travel rewards.

It’s ideal for travelers who want many of the perks and benefits from luxury cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, but with a more affordable annual fee.

If you’re a person who appreciates a card that offers perks like travel credits, airport lounge access, elite status, and travel protection, the Venture X could be a good fit for you.

Benefits of Venture X

  • Anniversary Bonus: Get 10,000 bonus miles every year on your account anniversary (worth $100 towards travel).
  • Annual Credit: Get a $300 annual credit for travel bookings made through Capital One Travel.
  • Lounge Access: Free access to over 1,300 Priority Pass lounges, plus access to Capital One lounges and Capital One Landings for cardholders and up to two guests per visit.
  • Rental Car Elite Status: Complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status for primary cardholders and authorized users (normally requires 15 rentals or $3,000 in spend).
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit: Get up to $120 in statement credits for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, which lets you bypass standard airport security lines.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement: Get up to $500 per person to cover reasonable expenses like hotels, food, clothes, toiletries and clothes when your flight is delayed by six hours or more (or requires an overnight stay).
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement: Get up to $3,000 per covered trip if the airline damages or loses your bags.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance: Get up to $2,000 per person for you and immediate family members for prepaid, nonrefundable tickets.
  • Rental Car Insurance: Get primary car rental coverage for up to $75,000 in damages caused by collision or theft to a rental car.
  • Cellphone Protection: Get up to $800 per claim with a maximum of two claims in a 12-month period ($50 deductible applies per claim) when you use the card to pay your monthly wireless bill.
  • Purchase Protection: Get up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account on purchases.
  • Return Protection: Get up to $300 per item and $1,000 per account when a merchant refuses a return.
  • Extended Warranty: Get an additional year of warranty on purchases.

That’s a massive list of benefits for the $395 annual fee.

The Venture X card already pays for itself even if you only use the first two perks on that list. You come out $5 ahead by utilizing the 10,000 mile anniversary bonus for travel and $300 in annual credits.

Miles Earnings Structure

The Venture X earns 2 miles per dollar on every purchase so it’s similar to the return of a cashback credit card that provides 2% back on purchases.

The card earns a higher rate of 5 miles per dollar for flights booked with Capital One Travel as well as 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked on Capital One Travel.

In my opinion, the Capital One Travel site works pretty well. I’d book my flights and rental cars here due to the Venture X’s excellent earn rate in these categories. You can also credit your flights and car rentals towards elite status at your preferred airline and rental company.

Booking hotels there is a different story (at least for me) because hotels won’t give you credit towards their elite status programs when booked outside of their own website.

I value my elite status benefits at Hyatt and Marriott, but if you aren’t loyal to a chain like me then it makes perfect sense to use the site for all your travel bookings.

It’s also important to point out that the Venture X card is the only consumer card that gives you 2x miles of uncapped earnings on everything while allowing you to transfer the miles to many airline and hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio.

That makes the card a very good one-card solution for a lot of people.

The Bottom Line

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Card is a terrific choice for travelers looking for an all-in-one travel rewards credit card and is definitely worth its annual fee.

Armed with a superb package of benefits (including a couple that easily justifies the fee) and a favorable earning structure, the Venture X is an impressive entry by Capital One into the premium travel card market.

Unfortunately, the initial welcome offer of 100,000 miles after spending $10,000 on purchases within the first six months from account opening ended earlier this year. Although the current welcome offer is still phenomenal and has a much lower spending requirement.

Capital One has made significant efforts to continually improve their card benefits and rewards program and that has in turn increased the value of their miles.

The launch of the Venture X card is the strongest evidence of this and immediately places them in contention for the best premier travel card.

Not every card is a perfect fit for everyone, but for many travelers, the Venture X from Capital One is a worthy addition to their wallet.
