Tips & Tricks For Chase Bank Promotions
Existing vs New Customers
Chase bonus offers typically only applies to new customers. Chase defines new customers as someone who doesn’t have an existing account in the same “product family” and didn’t close an account in that “product family” within the past 90 days.
For example, once you receive a bonus for opening a Chase Total Checking account, you won’t be eligible to receive another bonus on a different Chase personal checking account since personal checking accounts is a “product family”.
However, you may still be eligible to get a Chase savings account bonus or a Chase Business checking account since the offer terms generally only exclude you from other personal checking account promotions.
The same applies for Chase credit cards. You can receive one bonus per “card family”. For example, if you open a Chase Sapphire Preferred card and received a bonus, then you won’t be eligible for a Chase Sapphire Reserve bonus since they’re in the same Sapphire card family.
2-Year Limit
For virtually all Chase bonuses, you’re limited to receiving a welcome bonus only once every two years.
Again, welcome bonuses are by “product family” or “card family”.
5/24 Limit for Chase Credit Cards
Chase is well known for its 5/25 rule which blocks people from getting a new Chase credit card if they have opened 5 credit cards in the last 24 months.
This was implemented in June of 2015 and is based on the number of opened credit cards, not credit inquiries (some sites erroneously state the 5/24 rule is based on inquiries).
It’s important to note that Chase counts all new card accounts on your report, not just Chase accounts. For instance, if you applied for and have been approved for four American Express cards and one Citi card in the past 24 months, then you’ll be denied a Chase card if you apply for one.
Ninja Note: Some business cards won’t show up on your credit report, so those cards may not count against your five card limit.
Bonus Clawbacks
For bank account offers, you must keep the account open for six months or you’ll forfeit the bonus.
This would also apply if Chase is the one who closes your account – which could happen if you violate their terms and conditions.
Chase Promotions FAQs
Are sign-up bonuses taxed?
Cash bonuses from bank account offers are taxable and may be reported on IRS Form 1099-MISC. Keep in mind that even if no 1099-MISC (or 1099-INT) is sent to you, you’re still required to self-report and pay taxes. Consult your tax advisor for further information.
Credit card bonuses are typically not taxed, regardless if the bonus is in the form of cash, points, or miles. That’s because most credit card offers require a minimum spending amount to qualify for the bonus, so the reward is considered a rebate on the purchase rather than taxable income.
Where do I find Chase coupon codes?
You can find most Chase coupon codes on this page or by clicking here to show recent Chase offers.
From time to time, Chase may have targeted offers which are not publicly available and may vary from the details you see here.
Do Chase offers expire?
Yes, like most bank bonuses, Chase offers generally have an expiration date.
How long does it take to receive my bonus from Chase?
Payouts on bonuses from bank offers and credit card offers vary. Each offer may detail when the bonus will be received, so read each individual offer carefully.
Typically, Chase will award welcome bonuses or sign-up bonuses within 15 days of completing the qualifying activities.
If you haven’t received your bonus in the expected amount of time, contact Chase customer service. You can find their phone number on the Chase mobile app or on the back of your credit card.
Can I take advantage of multiple Chase promotions?
It depends. For example, once you receive a bonus for opening a Chase Total Checking account, you won’t be eligible to receive another bonus on a different Chase personal checking account.
However, you’re still eligible to get a Chase savings account bonus since the offer terms only exclude you from other personal checking account promotions.
The same applies for Chase credit cards. You can receive one bonus per “card family”. For example, if you open a Chase Sapphire Preferred card and received a bonus, then you won’t be eligible for a Chase Sapphire Reserve bonus since they’re in the same Sapphire card family.
The Bottom Line
Chase is one of the best companies for sign-up bonuses and welcome offers. No other company comes close to Chase (besides perhaps American Express).
While you shouldn’t choose a bank based solely on a new customer bonus, it’s a great incentive to try the many banking and credit card products that Chase offers.
I was someone who opened a Chase bank account and credit card for the huge bonuses, but stayed as a customer because of their excellent products – big fan of the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card and Chase Total Banking checking account).
Hi John,
I use your list of what counts as a direct deposit for various banks but I cant seem to fund that link any longer. Does it still exist???
Hi Larry, I believe you’re referring to this post.
That’s it Thanks John.
The $600 bonus for Savings and Checking account is “targeted” i assume meaning you need a specific code? How did you get it for 3 of your family members? Does it work more than once? Will you please share?
Hi Lily, the $600 offer for opening both the savings and checking account is not targeted. It’s publicly available and we have the offer listed. Please enter “Chase” in the search bar and you’ll see it pop up.
How to I get the bonus for opening a private client account?
Hi Stacey – this offer is back and is now $2,000. Please see the link above where you can get a coupon by entering your email address.
Hi John do you have a coupon code for $2000
Searching for the Chase Private Client coupon. Any suggestions or advice?
Hi Pat! There hasn’t been a Chase Private Client welcome offer in a while. You can be sure that we’ll update this page as soon as it does though.
Edit: You have great timing! It’s back with a $2,000 bonus – I added the offer in this post.
Please send me a $2000.00 coupon for private banking
Please see the new offer where you can get a coupon by entering your email address.
I just opened a Chase personal checking account via your link and it created the account but said coupon code couldn’t be added. I zeroed out and closed my personal checking account about a year ago, and still have a chase business credit card opened. Any idea? Is it just awaiting my deposit before it can apply the coupon code? Thanks!
The business credit card isn’t an issue for the personal checking account bonus. The coupon code is automatically added if you’re applying directly from the link and not requesting a coupon code. Is that how you did it? And just to confirm, you don’t have a personal checking account currently open and you haven’t received a checking account opening related bonus in the last two years?
So could I for example:
1. Sign up for the Chase Total Checking – $225 Bonus for myself
2. Refer my wife for $50
3. Sign up for the Chase Total Checking – $225 Bonus for wife
And get $500 even though we both live at the same address?
We have a Chase credit card, but no checking/savings account with Chase.
Wow, this is so helpful how you just laid all of this out for us! Quick question, can I combine as many of these that are applicable to me? Thanks!
Thank Ashley! And yes you can so long as they’re in different “product lines”.
For example, you can get one personal checking bonus, one business checking bonus, and one investing bonus. But you can’t get two personal checking bonuses.
This goes for credit cards too. You can get one Sapphire product line bonus and another bonus for a different type, like the Chase Ink business credit cards.
I have a side hustle, but it’s not registered as a business. Can I still get the $300 bonus from the Chase business checking promo?
Yes, absolutely. Most small businesses don’t need to incorporate. You’re a single-owner and your business name could be your actual name followed by DBA (doing business as).
For example: “John Smith DBA Smith Online Store”.
