What is Helium Mobile?

Helium Mobile, owned by parent company Nova Labs, is a cell phone service that’s built on a community-owned network, using blockchain to incentivize users to participate in network governance.

Users get paid in “Cloud Points”, which can be redeemed for perks like extra data, swag, morning coffee, and travel.

It’s made possible by comprising a network of individuals plugging in mobile hotspots to create a patchwork of what are essentially mini cell towers. Subscribers use Helium’s service where coverage is available and get T-Mobile service elsewhere.

Helium Free Service Plan

Helium has just launched a free service plan, named “Zero“, to go along with their existing two pay plans, “Air” and “Infinity“:

Plan NameZeroAirInfinity

The free phone plan is currently invite-only and waitlisted unless you have an invite code. The good news is we have two codes that you can use today to grab the free service plan!

Use either promo code BREAKFREE or HELIUMFREE when you register for an account directly at Helium Mobile.

The Bottom Line

After you use one of the invite codes, you need to download the Helium Mobile app to get a free eSim and phone number – no credit credit required.

The free plan is not enough for daily use by most people, but could be useful for some or if you just need a secondary number, especially for those who need another number to complete additional deals.

One detail to keep in mind is you need to always keep your location on in the Helium app and they share your anonymized calling data. This is how Helium is able to create the free plan in the first place.

I find this use of blockchain fascinating and will try it out with an old phone I have laying around the house.
