Even though Home Depot has nearly everything you could possibly need—from appliances to paint—you should still try to save money when you can. With home upkeep costing a whopping $2,000 a year for every $100,000 in your home’s value, it helps to save where you can.
How to Save Money at Home Depot
If you’re looking for ways to save money at Home Depot, look no further than this list of tips I compiled for you.
1. Look For Markdowns
As you walk through Home Depot, look for marked-down products. They’re labeled with a yellow price tag. If the price ends in a ‘6’, stop and hold out.
Six weeks from the markdown date, they’ll lower the price again, usually to about half the price you see now. Of course, if it’s something you need right now, you’re still saving something by buying it on clearance.
If the product price ends in a ‘3,’ that’s the lowest price it will ever be, so snag that deal while you can!
2. Learn How to Price Match at Home Depot
Find the same product (make, model, and color must be exact) at a lower price? You can price match at Home Depot.
If you’re shopping online, call Home Depot customer service at 800-466-3337 to get the price match. Bring the store’s circular or online ad to the customer service counter and get the lower price if you’re shopping in-store.
Home Depot price matches with major retailers, including Lowe’s, Walmart, Best Buy, True Value, Ace Hardware, Macy’s, Target, and even many smaller stores.
3. Use Cash-Back Shopping Sites to Earn Money Back
If you don’t use a cash back shopping site yet, you’re losing out on free money! Cash-back sites like Mr. Rebates or Rakuten pay you to shop at your favorite stores, like Home Depot.
It takes just one extra step. All you need to do is begin your online shopping at a cash back site.
Then simply search for the store you’re going to shop at, click on a link to be transferred to the store’s website, and you’ll earn a percentage of your total purchase amount in the form of cash back.
Cash back sites can also provides access to additional coupons and rebates you may not know about, potentially letting you double-dip on the savings.
By making sure I use a cash back portal every time I buy something online, I have literally earned thousands of dollars of cash back over the years.
4. Use a Cash Back Credit Card
If you have a cashback credit card that rotates categories or gives rewards for home improvement stores, use the card at Home Depot to earn money back on your purchases.

Important Tip: Only use a credit card if you can pay the balance off in full each month. Otherwise, you won’t save any money at all because you’ll pay interest on the balance.
5. Get a Free Home Depot Kids’ Workshop Kit for Free
Every month Home Depot releases a new Home Depot Kids’ Workshop Kit, and it’s free!
They arrive at Home Depot on the 1st of each month. They’re in limited quantities, so if you have a kid that loves building things, get to your local Home Depot each month for free entertainment for your kids.
6. Sign Up for Home Depot Workshops
If there’s something you’ve always wanted to master, like gardening or a specific painting technique, sign up for a Home Depot workshop.
They’re free, and once you complete the workshop, you’ll receive a 15% off your purchase coupon in your email.
Nowadays, many workshops are virtual rather than in-person. But, you can still get valuable information to help you fix up your home.

7. Time Your Paint Purchases
Painting your house is a big project and one that can get quite expensive before you even realize it. So put down your paintbrush until you can strategize the best time to buy the paint.
If you can time your projects or at least purchase the materials during major holidays sales like Memorial Day, Labor Day, or the 4th of July, you could save big on your painting projects.
On average, you’ll save about $5 to $10 per gallon. If you have a big painting project to do, that adds up to some massive savings!
8. Rent Tools at Home Depot
It might not seem like spending money is a ‘savings tip,’ but when you can rent a power tool for a fraction of the cost it is to buy it, you’ll clearly see the savings. This is especially true if you only foresee yourself using the tool once or twice.
Most Home Depots carry a large selection of tool rentals. If you only need the tool for a one-time project, rent it for the day and save the money for something else.
9. Check the ‘Specials and Offers’ Page Daily
Check Home Depot’s daily specials to see what offers they have for the day. Each day they offer 10 to 12 items at significant savings. Sometimes you can even score free shipping, too.
You can also browse the savings by the department to see what other offers you may be able to take advantage of that day.
10. Sign Up for Home Depot Emails and Save $5
It’s not a huge saving, but every dollar counts, right?
If you sign up for the Home Depot email newsletter, you’ll receive a $5 coupon. You’ll also receive advanced notice of upcoming sales and deals to help you save even more money.
If you really hate getting promotional emails, set it up to go into a special folder until you’re ready to look at them.
11. Shop the Home Depot Rebate Center
Shop the Home Depot rebate center before making large purchases, such as appliances, and see how much money you can save.
Just click on the rebate you want and print the form. Once you buy the product, file for the rebate and get your money back. Simple as that!

12. Shop Home Depot Overstock
Home Depot marks down its overstock (items it has too many of), passing the savings onto you. You’ll only find the deals online on the Overstock page, but you can find significant savings on top-quality products just by taking a little time to search.
You might even be surprised at what you find.
13. Ask For a Lower Price
It sounds crazy to ask Home Depot staff to lower the price of an item, but they do it.
In some locations, you have to talk to a manager, but not always. Whether you missed a recent sale or know you can find the same product cheaper elsewhere, if you are good at negotiating, you will likely save some money.
As I always say… it never hurts to ask! The worst they can say is no.
14. Veterans Get 10% Off Their Purchase
If you’re a military veteran or Reserve, show your valid government-issued ID and receive 10% off your purchase.
While this isn’t a posted discount at Home Depot, most stores offer it. You just have to ask their staff to apply it. It’s a great way to show gratitude for those who served (or are currently serving) our country.
15. Buy ‘Oops’ Paint
If you’re a bit adventurous, check out Home Depot’s ‘oops’ paint selection.
It sounds funny, but you might save more money than you’d think! Some stores have it readily displayed, and others hide it, so you may have to ask where it is.

Every year, Home Depot runs its Red, White, and Blue Sale, which lasts from 10 days to two weeks, around the 4th of July.
You can save up to 40% off large items during this sale, including appliances, patio furniture, and lawn tools. Don’t miss it!

Black Friday isn’t just for November at Home Depot. You can find significant savings during the Spring Black Friday sale, which usually occurs at the beginning of April.

If you’re an avid gardener, join the Home Depot Garden Club. It’s free, and you’ll receive $5 off your purchase. Plus you’ll receive emails and text alerts with special and exclusive deals for Garden Club members.

19. Return Dead Plants Within a Year
Whether you have a green thumb or not, Home Depot stands behind its plants. If your shrubs, flowers, or plants (not annuals) don’t make it a year, you can return the dead plant for a full refund.
