This promotion offered a bonus as high as $250 (available in Q4 2023) and as low as $50 (in 2022), so the current version is decent – not the worst, but not the best either.

Refer a friend to M1 and earn a $75 cash bonus for every friend that signs up and funds their portfolio with at least $10,000. Your friend will also get $100 in cash.

The Bottom Line
The $100 referral bonus is straight-forward and easy to do while the tiered sign-up bonus is better if you have more money available to deposit.
I’d imagine that the deposit promotion won’t be as popular due to the high amounts of assets required. At the lowest tier, getting $75 for depositing $10,000 amount to a 0.0075% bonus.
As for the M1 platform itself, I do like their value proposition of providing users a self-directed brokerage account with features like automated rebalancing and other automation services. Other competitors, like Wealthfront for example, packages this into their robo-advisor service and charges 0.25% for it (though to be fair, you get a lot of guidance and assistance from Wealthfront with that fee).
I’ll include this M1 promotion in the list of the best bank bonuses.
A $500 bonus for tying up $100,000 for six months doesn’t sound wonderful to me. That’s 1/2 of 1% for six months or 1% on an annualized basis … right? I’d rather do a bunch of regular bank bonuses, but whatever floats your boat I guess.
Your calculation is right, but keep in mind it’s not only the bonus as you can put it in their HYSA 5% savings account for a 6% annualized return. I think that’s pretty decent – not the same level as the Capital One 360 promotion ($1,500 bonus + 4.25%), but many of us have already burned through that.

That’s correct, Eric. Instead of opening an account directly, when you use someone’s link, both you and the other person gets a bonus so it’s a win-win for both parties.
