Miles App

The free-to-use Miles app lets you get rewarded for all your transportation. Earn miles and redeem them for rewards. Every mile you travel will earn at a different rate depending on your method of transportation:

  • 5x miles = bicycle
  • 3x miles = public transport (bus, train, subway)
  • 2x miles = car
  • 0.1x miles = airplane

You can redeem your miles for things like Amazon gift cards, Walmart gift cards, and Starbucks gift cards.

The Bottom Line

I’ve been using the Miles app since 2019 and it’s much better now than before.

While the earnings rate for your travel has stayed the same, the ability to redeem your miles for popular gift cards is a game changer. Previously, you could only redeem miles for “free trial offers” which were 99.9% useless.

For example, you can redeem 250 miles to sign up for Webull and get 6 free stocks, but why would you do that when ANYONE can join and get the same free stock offer.

Another redemption requires 200 miles to get $145 off your first order at Blue Apron, but here’s the same meal delivery promo that doesn’t cost a thing.

Letting users redeem miles for gift cards for popular brands (e.g. Amazon, Target, Marshalls) has made me use the app again. Here are some gift card redemption levels and the number of miles you need for each:

  • $1 Amazon.com gift card = 10,000 miles
  • $5 Panera gift card = 15,000 miles
  • $10 Marshalls gift card = 50,000 miles
  • $25 Starbucks gift card = 125,000 miles

Based on the gift card redemption levels, Miles is effectively assigning a value of $1 per 10,000 miles. It may seem like a lot, but keep in mind that each mile you travel gets calculated with a bonus.

Unless you travel a lot or live in a major city, the Miles app earns at a slow pace for sure. But it’s free and you get something useful out of it. I also don’t find it to drain my battery all that much.
