The Bottom Line
If you didn’t get the email, check your Venmo app. The offer should appear at the top of the main screen.
This is a no-brainer since you’re getting $25 worth of crypto for free. Even if you’re not a believer in a cryptocurrency future, this is a risk-free bet.
I find the offer interesting too because PayPal owns Venmo, but has an identical crypto offer.
I think Venmo is being very deceptive with this offer. I took the bait and purchased $50 of Ethereum from them. I had my Coinbase window open as well to compare crypto market prices. Venmo market prices were a few dollars higher than Coinbase’s but I thought “$25 free crypto” was worth the discrepancy. At the time of my purchase, Ethereum was selling at around $3,525 per token. When I clicked “buy”, the price “suddenly” jumped to $3,550, and then dropped back just as quickly…. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out I just paid for the $25 “Reward” Venmo is going to give me.
Hi Spencer. Thanks for mentioning the spread that Venmo charges, I need to add that in this post. I believe most places you buy cryptocurrencies from contain a spread.
However, I want to comment on what you said at the end because you’re still getting $25 in free crypto. Using your example, if you buy $25 worth of Ethereum (ETH) for $3,550 instead of $3,525; that doesn’t mean you’re losing the $25 Venmo reward.
It just means your cost basis for ETH is slightly higher. Specifically speaking about this deal, if you spend exactly $25, this is a completely free deal regardless of the higher price you bought ETH for.
