Shop Your Way® 5321® Visa Credit Card Overview

When Citi announced that it was replacing the fan favorite Shop Your Way® Mastercard® with the Citi ThankYou® Mastercard® on November 3, 2025, many people including myself, were really saddened that it was going away.

While it wasn’t as well known as other mainstream credit cards, there were many reasons I called it the best “store” credit card in my review. It had solid category spend bonuses and extremely valuable targeted offers that were unmatched. Seriously, how could you not love offers like 10% back at grocery stores or get $75 back when you spend $750?

Well, the good news is that the people behind the original card have announced that they’re creating a new card that retains many of the benefits we valued while adding several enhancements.

This new card, the Shop Your Way® 5321 Visa® Credit Card, officially opened for applications today, and I’ve got all the important details around this card so let’s compare it to the legacy card and whether it’s worth adding to your wallet.

High-Level Changes

Before I go over arguably the two most important aspects (rewards earning structure and redemption options), I wanted to highlight some changes compared to the legacy version of this card.

Some may or may not be important to you, but it’s always good to understand what has changed. I’ll also add commentary on my opinion of the importance of the change:

Card Issuer: It’s now issued by First Bank & Trust, replacing Citibank. This shouldn’t affect your day-to-day experience of using the card.

Network: It’s now under the Visa network, replacing Mastercard. Both Visa and Mastercard have nearly identical global acceptance, so again, this to me is a “cosmetic” change for virtually all intents and purposes.

Annual Percentage Rate: The APR is now a tiered interest rate† based on your credit profile vs a flat 33% rate. This would help those who carry a balance, but readers of this site know I recommend to never carry a balance and only charge what you can afford to pay off entirely each month. It’s The Money Ninja way!

Mobile Wallets: You’ll be able to add this to your mobile wallets and pay via Google Pay and Apple Pay. This is a nice feature that was previously missing.

Key Unique Benefit: The limited-time cardmember offers we love should remain with the new card. We’ll have to wait to see what type of offers we get before making a final judgement, but I’m glad limited-time offers are still being planned.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s take a look at what most people are eager to learn about.

Rewards Earning Structure

Similar to the legacy card, the 5321 Visa Credit Card earns a percentage back on all eligible spend, but expands the categories in which you can earn a higher rate at (categories in bold are enhancements):

  • 5% back in points on purchases at gas stations, EV charging, and everyday transit (e.g. public transit, taxis, rideshare, parking, tolls, and car washes).
  • 3% back in points on purchases on dining, groceries, and travel (e.g. flights, hotels, rental cars, timeshares, and travel agencies).
  • 2% back in points on purchases at Shop Your Way merchant partners (Sears, Kenmore, and Sears Home Services).
  • 1% back in points on online purchases and everywhere else Visa is accepted.

The expansion of category bonuses make it more of an everyday card compared to before. The Shop Your Way team is also launching the card with uncapped categories (you were limited to $10,000 of purchases in the prior version), which means you can earn as much category bonuses as you can spend.

Personally, I travel a lot and getting 3% back on flights and hotels is very competitive, and compares favorably versus a popular travel card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Credit Card.

For instance, if I spend $3,500 on flights for my wife and I, I’ll earn $105 worth of points with the 5321 Visa Credit Card. I’d get just 7,000 points (Sapphire Preferred card earns 2x on travel), worth approximately ~$70.

What’s more, there’s no annual fee† for the 5321 Visa Credit Card while the Sapphire Preferred charges $95 a year. This is huge because although you can get a lot of value from the CSP card, you’d have to work your way out of the sunk cost, while the no annual fee 5321 Visa Credit Card nets you a “profit” on Day 1.

Redemption Options

The redemption options are what I love most about this card. You earn 10 base points per dollar spent. In terms of value, every 1,000 points is worth $1, so for example, 10,000 points is worth $10.

Previously, the best way to redeem points was to exchange them for popular gift cards in the Shop Your Way (SYW) portal. I redeemed most of my points for Amazon.com and Home Depot gift cards, but there are hundreds of them to choose from, including:

  • Airbnb
  • Apple
  • Delta Airlines
  • Etsy
  • Hotels.com
  • Instacart
  • Lowe’s
  • Lyft
  • Nike
  • Old Navy (can also be used at Gap and Banana Republic)
  • Publix
  • Stop & Shop
  • TJ Maxx (can also be used at Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Home Sense)
  • Uber (can also be used for Uber Eats)
  • Walmart

There’s also an option to redeem them for Visa gift cards, but I stopped selecting this method because it was too difficult to use online. Many retailers had a hard time processing them since the cards didn’t have your personal information tied to it.

This was problematic for retailers that require personal information for verification purposes (e.g. name and billing address) to authorize the charge. These Visa gift cards were fine for in-person use though.

Gift cards and Visa gift cards are still available with the 5321 Visa Credit Card, but now you’re able to redeem points for real cash back! Once you have at least 5,000 points, this card allows you to use them for statement credits against your balance.

Statement credits are a game-changer for me. I’d much rather redeem 100,000 points for a $100 as a statement credit than be handcuffed to a gift card for a specific retailer.

Many people love gift cards though and they still represent a decent value. I heard from many readers that you guys give them out as birthday presents or Christmas stocking stuffers as a way to avoid spending actual money. Smart cookies.

I heard other redemption options are coming in early 2026 too, putting this on par or ahead of the other rewards cards in terms of overall points flexibility1.

The Bottom Line

Count me in as someone who is excited to apply for the Shop Your Way 5321 Visa Credit Card. The refresh has enhanced the features and benefits that we love in tangible ways.

If the targeted offers (what they call “challenge bonuses”) are similar to what it was in the prior version, this makes it a no-brainer card to get.

It’s rare to find a no annual fee† card that provides a strong earnings and rewards structure. You’d typically expect this from a credit card that charges a modest to significant annual fee.

I own A LOT of credit cards (17 active personal and business ones) and can see the potential of this card as a “one card to rule them all”. Some quick thoughts when I compare this card to a few other ones I hold:

  • Citi Custom Cash® can earn 5% cash back on gas if it’s your top spend category, but you’re limited to $500 each billing cycle and everyday transit is a separate category from gas.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® now gives you 4x on flights and hotels booked directly, but they removed the 3x earn on all other travel-related purchases (you do earn 8x on airfare/hotel/car rentals by booking through their specialized travel portal, Chase Travel), but it charges you a whopping $795 annual fee.
  • American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card earns 3% cash back at supermarkets, but you’re capped at $6,000 per year at that rate – it goes down to 1% after $6,000 in purchases.

Now, to be fair, this card doesn’t have the airline and hotel transfer partners that American Express, Chase Bank, and Citibank offers, and those can be particularly lucrative for travelers. Plus, the 5321 Visa Credit Card charges a 3% foreign transaction fee†, which makes it a potentially strong “one card to rule them all” domestically, but not for international spend.

On the other hand, you can’t overlook the straightforward and excellent earnings and rewards structure of this card. For someone who values cold, hard cash and don’t want to mess with transferring points to this airline program or that hotel chain, this may very well be one of the best options out there.

I look forward to applying now that applications are live, and if everything is as great as expected, the 5321 Visa Credit Card will definitely be included in my list of the best credit cards.

This could very well be one of the best new cards to get for 2026.

I also look forward to taking advantage of some of the planned welcome bonuses, but I don’t know any additional details on that at this time.

So… I think the doom and gloom many were lamenting about with the demise of the prior version were warranted at the time when we didn’t know anything, but with the announcement of the replacement card, we can collectively breathe out a little easier.
